Lake Tret is a favourite destination for locals in all seasons. It is easy to understand why: the lake can be reached in just 40 minutes on foot, its waters are suitable for swimming and nearby there is a mountain hut and a farmstead. In spring the meadows are a picture of golden buttons. In summer a dip in its waters is a healthy cure for one and all. In autumn, with fog and mist it takes on a mystical aspect. And in winter if the temperatures are low and the snow not yet abundant you can even skate there!

    Author’s recommendation

The itinerary presented here proposes a circular route through the woods. If you just want to get to the lake, you can go back the same way. Calculate 40 minutes for the ascent and 30 minutes for the descent.A few minutes' walk from the lake you will find the Malga di San Felice and the Rifugio Waldruhe, which offer simple and genuine dishes, all of them made in the malga farmstead.

Near the car park is the small Hotel Scoiattolo. Its wooded terrace and excellent cakes are well worth a visit and round off well a wonderful day in close contact with nature!

    Safety information

The itinerary does not present any technical difficulties.

Those who find it uncomfortable to walk on a path with stones and roots can choose to continue on the dirt road instead of cutting from the path as described here. In this way, the slope decreases but the route becomes longer. It therefore takes about an hour on foot to reach the lake along the dirt road.

    Tips and suggestions

Lake Tret is located on the border between the provinces of Trento and Bolzano. The lake itself is called Felixer Weiher for its South Tyrolean neighbours! Only 2 km after the village of Tret, continuing in the direction of the Passo Palade, you reach the village of St. Felix (BZ). Following the signs for Felixer Weiher, you will reach the car park above the village and then continue on foot to the lake.

The ascent from St. Felix is less steep than the ascent from Tret.

    Roadbook

By car you can reach Plazze di tret which is located just beyond the village of Fondo in the direction of Passo Palade. Along the main road you will see a fork on the right with the signs for Lake Tret. Take the asphalt road that climbs to the large parking area along the road.

From the car park, continue along the initially asphalted road, which after the last houses becomes a dirt road. After a few minutes of walking you can see a path on the left with the classic red-white signs that leaves the dirt road to enter the woods. After about a hundred metres the path crosses the dirt road that it followed at the beginning and then continues in the shade of the wood. Here you can see the signs for trail 512 towards Lago di Tret.

The path gradually rises with some slightly steep stretches and with sometimes uneven ground due to the presence of stones and roots. As it nears the lake, the path crosses the dirt road several times, it also leading to the lake, and having a much wider expanse.

The last stretch of the route winds steeply along the dirt road that then descends gently towards the lake. Our itinerary skirts the glittering lake along the left bank and then completes the entire tour. Along the banks there are meadows, some benches and two piers where you can stop to relax or take a dip. The water may not seem wonderfully clear but the quality and purity of the water are certified as excellent!

After a well-deserved break and a visit to the nearby malga di San Felice or Rifugio Waldruhe you can prepare for your return. The route proposed here completes the circle and then descends from a different path than that of the outward journey.

There is nothing to prevent one from shortening the time and instead following the same route as the one taken uphill. When you reach the gate on the right bank of the lake, take the cart track on the left, which climbs towards the Malga di Fondo. At the top of the climb, on the right, there is a path indicated as trail number 57, it climbing slightly towards "Doss de Solomp" and then gradually descending through woods and clearings until it crosses trail 512, it connecting Plazze di Tret to the lake of the same name. On getting here, descend to the left along the path and return to the starting point.

Near the car park is the small Hotel Scoiattolo. Its wooded terrace and excellent cakes are a worthy finale to a wonderful day in close contact with nature!
