The Trentino Unexpected Exhibition

6 photographers tell of a Trentino far from stereotypes

Castles, vineyards, woods, glaciers. Landscapes and stories. Six great photographers tell of a different Trentino. Unexpected. Six points of view that gave life to Trentino Unexpected, a cultural project developed by the partnership between Trentino Marketing and the publishing house Gribaudo.

The photos of Trentino Unexpected have been collected in an impressive photographic volume, presented at the latest Turin Book Fair.

From 12 July to 9 November 2025, these picture shots will come to life from the pages of the book, transformed into large and jumbo prints displayed at the Trentino Unexpected exhibition held at the MART Museum of Rovereto.

The Trentino Unexpected project

From forests to castles, from glaciers to vineyards, Trentino is home to landscapes and stories, nature and production activities, panoramas and relationships. To portray this complex intertwining of regional elements, six professional photographers expertly relied on art, reportage and photojournalism: Simone Bramante, Francesco Jodice, Gabriele Micalizzi, Roselena Ramistella, Massimo Sestini and Newsha Tavakolian.

These artists were given the task of freely expressing their own point of view on Trentino through their own stylistic signature.

The result is the photographic volume Trentino Unexpected, edited by photography critic Denis Curti, and published by Gribaudo (a publisher of the Feltrinelli Group, Italy’s seventh largest publishing house specialised in miscellaneous and illustrated literature).

The images that enrich the almost two hundred pages of the book are accompanied by words, which introduce the different sections of the volume, and quotes ranging from Gae Aulenti to Arthur Schopenhauer, from Raymond Carver to Francesco Guccini, from Max Weber to Alcide De Gasperi.

The exhibition is held at the MART Museum of Rovereto

The MART exhibition features 86 photographs divided into 6 sections, one for each author: Sestini, Ramistella, Bramante, Tavakolian, Micalizzi and Jodice.

Each section is different, a choice made to underscore the originality of each work: from medium sizes to jumbo prints, by means of picture collections, diptychs and traditional or more innovative displays. The deeply personal and diverse points of view on display tell a multifaceted story.

Far from stereotypes and postcards, Trentino Unexpected describes places, gives voice to people, and focuses on social changes, the roots of identity and the values of the land.

At the entrance to the exhibition, some banners announce the project’s key words: borders, verticality, authenticity, care and footprint.

At the end of the exhibition, 53 “backstage” images and video stories give the audience a peek into the research work conducted in Trentino by the photographers.
