MALGA ZUGNA
Information
There are at least three good reasons to go up to the Malga Zugna Refuge:
1. immerse yourself in nature and enjoy wide panoramas;
2. reconstruct the events of the Great War on this history-laden mountain;
3. admire the stars from the observatory that the Civic Museum of Rovereto has built at an altitude of 1,617 meters.
The building dates back to the early 1900s and has been completely renovated by the Municipality of Rovereto, but the war testimonies found along the access road have recently been restored as well, leading through Monte Zugna towards Passo Buole.
RECOMMENDED ITINERARIES
The crossing to Passo Buole (1 hour and 40 minutes of walking, difficulty E) is of great historical interest due to the testimonies of the Great War encountered along the route, just half an hour's walk through Monte Zugna.
A path of great historical interest is the one that, starting from the refuge, reaches the places that were the theater of the Great War. Specifically, the area of Coni Zugna, where the main military artifacts of the time were recovered as part of the Peace Path project: aqueduct, military hospital, along with trenches and walkways. Along these sections of the trail, panoramic points towards the Adige Valley and the Baldo Mountain Group, as well as the Pasubio Group, are plentiful. This area can be reached by following the Peace Path (trail marker no. 115) in about 30 minutes from the refuge, and from there you can continue to Passo Buole (where the road from Ala arrives), the “Thermopylae of Italy” that was the site of fierce battles.
FAMILY TRAILS
It is recommended to park at the refuge and explore nearby trails that vary from 30 minutes to 2 hours of walking on easy paths. A forest road accessible with strollers leads to the summit with a walk of about 50 minutes.
