A mine in the woods
The presence of mineral seams, in particular chalcopyrite for copper, gave rise to mining activities in the Valle del Fersina area from prehistoric times to just a few decades ago.
The industry flourished, especially in the early 1500s when many German miners called Bergknappen (knòppn in Mòcheno) excavated around a hundred tunnels, leaving lasting marks not only on the landscape but also on the local culture, its image, stories and legends.
