Between 1542 and 1563, Trento was at the centre of world affairs as the eponymous site of the Council that altered the history of the Church. The Diocesan Museum in Trento is the best place to learn more about this period. In the historic Palazzo Pretorio, where the prince bishops once lived, you can admire an incredible treasure trove of art and culture. Paintings, wooden sculptures, illuminated manuscripts, precious jewellery, ancient embroidery and sumptuous Flemish tapestries… a wealth of art dating to between the 11th and 19th centuries is accompanied by fascinating insights and multi-media installations.
The museum tour is enriched by an exciting passage that allows the visitor to observe the nearby Cathedral of San Vigilio from above. Furthermore, the museum also manages the early Christian Basilica of San Vigilio located under the Cathedral, the Porta Veronensis (1st century AD), or the ancient monumental entrance to the Roman Tridentum, and the Torre di Piazza, which with its 45 meters of height constitutes the unmistakable symbol of the city.
