Burning March
Ancient tradition of pagan origin rich in meanings: with fire, the bad season is burned, and at the same time, the warmth of the flames warms Mother Earth.
In summary, it is a rite of fertility and fecundity. The great fire represents the pinnacle of a series of events that begin several days earlier when the boys, wandering through the streets of the village with instruments designed to produce noise (usually bells), collect firewood from families to prepare the large pile. In this case, the bells serve to awaken Mother Nature, and the wood that each family offers represents the personal "sacrifice" for the success of the rite.
The warmth of the flames warmed Mother Nature (the earth) while burning the bad season. In Lusérn, each neighborhood would light its “martzo,” and the whole village would participate in the event to celebrate the end of the harsh winter, singing and telling stories around the bonfire.
Today, like yesterday, on the hill above the village, called Kraütz, the lighting of the bonfire is renewed on the last Saturday of February, involving the entire community.
And this ancient tradition is repeated every year in the small village of Lusérn, where time has stood still, where the ancient Cimbrian language is spoken, and where the boundary between legends and reality is difficult to understand for those immersed in the frenzy of modern life.
To learn about this beautiful tradition, feel part of a community that opens its most authentic moments to tourists and experience something truly unique.
