A walk ideal for children, too, which ventures in one of the many canyons that rivet the Val di Non: Santa Giustina’s canyon. A new bridge crosses the river Noce at the bottom of the canyon, leading hikers to the other bed of the river and admire the picturesque hermitage hailing back to the 13th century

This itinerary starts at the car park next to Tassullo train station. The first stretch of this walk descends along paths cutting across apple orchards, to then become steeper on a path recently fitted with a handrail and banisters to make it more secure. You’ll reach the bottom of the canyon where a brand new wooden bridge crosses the river Noce, which has just started its course after flowing from the Santa Giustina dam. Head uphill to the other side of the canyon which, thanks to its south-westerly exposure is blessed by mild temperatures even in the heart of autumn. Here lie the remains of the ancient hermitage of Santa Giustina. The uphill stretch comes to an end via a slightly exposed part fitted with a banister, to then reach the apple orchards and end the tour in the nearby village of Tassullo.

    Tips and suggestions

The Santa Giustina gorge is also a Nature Park of the Trentino, a protected oasis which safeguards the flora and fauna biodiversity of this area. These areas have become incredibly rare to the massive changes wrought by mankind, making the preservation of the same of tantamount importance to maintain nature’s genetic biodiversity. For further information on the Natura Park, click here: Santa Giustina gorge.

    Roadbook

From the car park near Tassullo train station, follow the white-red signs for directions to the Hermitage of Santa Giustina.

Go under the subway which allows you to safely cross the train tracks, and take a left coasting the tracks briefly on an asphalt road. Continue following the red-white signs on walls and the asphalt, descending into the apple orchard, and then take a right a few metres before the asphalt road turns into a gravel road. Continue following the signs to reach the bran new bridge across the river Noce.

The bottom of the gorge where the river flows is also a Nature Park. You can still see the wych elm forests and birds such as the colourful river kingfisher, the dipper – an expert diver – and the black-feathered bird called dabchick.Getting back uphill is fairly quick and you’ll find yourself in the orchard in no time. On the right you’ll see a sign for the village of Dermulo, just a 15-minute walk away.

To complete the circuit and return to Tassulo, continue across the orchard following the red-white signs on the cement pillars that bear the weight of the facilities for planting apples.

Reach a rest area on the edge of the provincial road next to the dam of Santa Giustina. Follow the pavement coasting the dam and reach the spacious car park next to a high street with some shops, a cafe, and a restaurant. Cross the park, take a left, and continue on an asphalted road running across the field leading to Tassullo station, and by so doing avoid traffic.
