In the footsteps of the "Frati" of Val Duron
A journey to the origins of the Dolomites, when they were submerged in a tropical marine environment, among carbonate rocks formed from the fossilised remains of shells, corals and algae.
This walk, which leads from Campitello through Val Duron to Baita Lino Brach, famous for its polenta, is a gentle hike to be enjoyed in all seasons. The colours of Sassopiatto and the Catinaccio change, as do the woods, pastures and rocks, just like the clothing and equipment needed along the way. What remains unchanged is the geological and natural heritage that makes this valley unique. Val Duron preserves tropical fossils embedded in the rock, minerals such as rose quartz, and is home to rare and protected plant and animal species, including the rock ptarmigan, black grouse, hazel grouse and capercaillie. The landscape is also shaped by the "Frati", rounded rock formations sculpted by selective erosion, silent guardians of a valley where time has created remarkable forms.
