It is a walk suitable for everyone that aims to retrace part of the history of the Alta Val di Non. The signposts are white with orange indications and bear the inscription Kaiserpromenade, located along the route.

The first 300 meters of the path lead to the Tonale and Mendola state road, then you go down along the sidewalk for about 700 meters to the Hotel Regina del Bosco (this stretch will also be covered on the return).

    Author’s recommendation

Continuing in the forest beyond the Regina del Bosco Residence, you find the remains of the old railway line that connected Dermulo to the Mendola Pass. The line was 27 km long, narrow gauge, and cost two million crowns in 1907. Work started on July 1, 1907, and ended on July 22, 1909. That day, the workers celebrated at the Hotel Regina del Bosco. In 1933 it was dismantled, and much of the rolling stock and rails were taken and used in Ethiopia after the conquest of African colonies during the fascist period, between Addis Ababa and Massawa. The upper Val di Non was also served by part of the Oltradige with a funicular, still in operation, connecting S. Antonio/Caldaro to the Mendola Pass. It was built in 1903, and in just 12 minutes you overcome a difference in altitude of 850 m and a gradient of 64% over a length of 2.4 km. These were the times when the Mendola Pass was a tourist destination for the Habsburgs. Numerous buildings, besides the Imperial Villa, testify to this. There was also a golf course at the Pass, along with many other activities related to mountain tourism.

The building of the Hotel Regina del Bosco was built by Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria in 1883 as a hunting residence. Opposite the hotel is the visitable ancient underground icehouse of the residence.

    Roadbook

The first 300 meters of the path lead to the Tonale and Mendola state road, then you go down along the sidewalk for about 700 meters to the Hotel Regina del Bosco (this stretch will also be covered on the return).

After admiring the Hotel Regina del Bosco from the outside (the "hunting residence" of Emperor Franz Joseph), cross the road and enter the forest, first passing over the old railway track and then through the meadows of Malosco, from where you can enjoy a beautiful panorama of the entire Val di Non and the Maddalene mountain range from Monte Luco to Monte Pin, then the mountains of Val di Rabbi, Val di Sole up to the Presanella (which, at 3558 m above sea level, is the highest mountain in Trentino). To the south, you can see the Brenta Dolomites group, the Paganella, and Monte Bondone. Information boards with brief explanations are placed at points of interest.
