Loop trail on Pian della Nana and Sasso Rosso Peak
A loop hike from and to Mount Peller Refuge (2022 m a.s.l.), through the lush green of Pian della Nana.

Pian della Nana is an enormous plateau more than 2000 metres above sea level, stretching a generous five kilometres long and one kilometre wide. As you walk through the pastures of Pian della Nana, you’ll get the chance to observe a truly remarkable abundance of floral varieties that cheerfully colour the meadows teeming with sheep, goats, horses, donkeys and where you may quite easily spot a marmot.

This trail is not difficult in itself, but it may present a few challenges in the event of bad weather along the short descent to Pra Castron where there are a few rocky blocks to overcome. Along the entire itinerary, the view stretches over the wide valley of Pian della Nana and there are often fossils testifying to the life in the Jurassic seas.

Roadbook
Difficulty: EEA (expert hikers with equipment)
Trail 337 leads to the grassy and panoramic summit of Mount Peller, along an easy yet steep path, which is slightly exposed in some sections (a steel rope provides protection), and then descends into the meadows of Malga Tassulla. From here, trail 336 (road trail in the meadows) leads to the Passo della Nana pass. Here, climb up the hillside up a gentle, constant slope along the Cesta Peak-Nana Peak ridge. The East-West ridge between Sasso Rosso and Uomo Peak can be reached by climbing through fine debris on a good trail, which then quickly descends to the Pracastron Pass amid isolated towers and rocky creeks. This area boasts a large number of geological monuments, which bear witness to the tormented architectures of the ocean beds from the dawn of time (underwater landslides and underwater canyons of Sasso Rosso).
A downhill section of trail 310 leads you to the junction with trail 306: this trail circumvents Uomo Peak winding its way along a semi-circular trail along the comfortable mountain ledges, allowing you to walk along Uomo Pass, where you can observe an intrinsic network of Karstic crevasses. This section of the trail affords the best views of Lake Tovel, which looks like a distant gem set in the deep fir forest.
To hike down to Pian della Nana, take your time and follow trail markers 306 on the rocky blocks towards the West and then the South-West, which will lead you along the only valley that allows you to overcome the switch to rocky terrain. You may encounter a few orientation problems in this section in the event of bad weather because the trail markers were far and few between when these notes were written. Once you have reached Malga Tassulla, you can avoid climbing up Mount Peller again and instead take road no. 336-313 back to the departure point.
Difficulty: EE (expert hikers)
If instead of taking trail 337 up to Mount Peller Peak you choose to circumvent the peak from the base by following trail 308 until you cross trail 336, you will avoid the exposed section with a protective rope and any difficulties this entails.
Public transport
You can reach the town of Cles using public transport. From here, you will need your own vehicle to travel along the 14-km gravel road leading to the car park just under Peller Refuge.Directions
Drive to Cles, the capital of Val di Non. Cross the centre of town and climb upstream of Cles by following the signs to Bersaglio / Peller Refuge. Just past Bersaglio, take the gravel road on the right with signs to Peller Refuge. Continue for 14 km along this road - which is asphalt surfaced in parts - until you reach the car park in Durigat. The road surface is uneven in places, so we recommend you tackle it aboard a suitable vehicle.Parking
A large car park can be found in Durigat, near the namesake lake. Continue along the gravel road on the right towards Peller Refuge and you’ll find additional parking spaces - you’ll reach the refuge after a 5-minute walk from here.Coordinates
