Historical march
40 Mile Range Challenge
This historical march commemorates the liberation of Nago-Torbole and Riva by soldiers of the U.S. 10th Mountain Division (the so-called “American Alpini”) in the final days of April 1945. American troops advanced along the eastern shore of Lake Garda from Peschiera del Garda to Torbole sul Garda, liberating one lakeside town after another.
The battle of Torbole and Riva was particularly fierce due to the strong resistance put up by German troops, resulting in numerous casualties on both sides.
The historical march has been held annually for more than ten years and brings between 500 and 1,000 participants to the Torbole area, together with their families. Most participants are active-duty soldiers stationed at various U.S. military bases, including Vicenza and Aviano, as well as contingents from bases in Germany and soldiers who travel directly from the United States specifically for the event.
