We Burn March
An ancient pagan tradition rich in meanings: with fire, we burn the bad season and, at the same time, the warmth of the flames warms Mother Earth.
It is essentially a rite of fertility and abundance. The big fire represents the climax of a series of events that begin several days earlier when boys, walking through the streets of the village with instruments meant to produce noise (usually bells), collect wood from households to prepare the big pile. In this case, the bells serve to awaken Mother Nature, and the wood that each family offers represents the personal "sacrifice" for the success of the rite.
The warmth of the flames warmed Mother Nature (the Earth) while also burning the bad season. In Lusérn, each district lit its "martzo," and all the townspeople participated in the event to celebrate the end of the harsh winter, singing and telling stories around the bonfire.
Today, as in the past, on the hill above the village, called Kraütz, the last Saturday of February sees the renewal of the bonfire lighting that involves the entire community.
And this ancient tradition is repeated every year in the small village of Lusérn, where time has stopped, where the ancient Cimbrian language is spoken, and where the boundary between legends and reality is difficult to understand for those immersed in the frenzy of modern life.
To learn about this beautiful tradition, to feel part of a community that shares its truest moments with tourists, and to experience something truly unique.
Program "Vorprennen in Martzo":
- 5:00 PM meeting and departure for collecting wood along the streets of the village;
- 6:30 PM heading to Croce;
- 7:00 PM lighting of the bonfire, followed by tea and Vin Brulé for everyone;
- followed by traditional pasta at the Luserna firefighters' station;
