The route mostly runs along lightly trafficked paved roads except for a few sections at the foot of Monte Roen and near the Laghetti Ai Masi in the village of Ruffrè. It does not include challenging climbs except for the final ascent, which is worth tackling to reach the summit of Monte Penegal with its 360° panorama over Bolzano, Lake Caldaro, the Adige Valley, the Sciliar, the Catinaccio, and the Roda de Vaèl.

    Author’s recommendation

An ideal place for a stop is the characteristic Laghetti ai Masi di Ruffrè.

In the parking lot in front of the tourist office at Passo Mendola, there is an e-bike charging station.

    Roadbook

From Passo Mendola take the paved road just above the cable car station following signs to Rifugio Genzianella. The road, which corresponds to the SAT 500 marker, then becomes a dirt road and with a gentle climb leads to the refuge. At the junction near the refuge, continue on the dirt road to the right leaving the SAT 500 marker on your left. You will soon reach the Campi Golf locality and the Roen Stube restaurant at the start of the Monte Roen chairlift.

Now return to Passo Mendola along the paved road, and once at the pass, descend to the left along the state road until shortly past a small chapel on the left and the junction with the road descending to the village of Ruffrè. Take the descent and continue to the Ruffrè cemetery just before a tunnel. Here turn left and follow the signs for the Coflari Ranch riding stable. Descend through the stable and go around the first building on the left to find a comfortable dirt road leading to Maso Michei of Ruffrè. Upon reaching the farmstead, descend left on the dirt road crossing some vegetable gardens and then go around the Laghetti ai Masi di Ruffrè passing in front of the Mas da la Val farm. Continue without crossing the bridge leading to the farmstead, staying on the paved road to the right which climbs with a hairpin bend to the center of Ruffrè village. At the junction at the top of the climb, continue right passing a small supermarket and proceed until you reach the junction near the cemetery. At the junction, turn right along the same road taken on the way there, and shortly after take the paved ascent to the left with the clear sign "Villini dell'Alpe."

After the short ascent, you find yourself near the Garnì Biancaneve along the state road leading to Mendola. Using the safe pavement, continue right along the state road heading toward Passo Mendola. Shortly before the pass, notice on the opposite side of the road the sign for Panorama Hotel Penegal: here begins the steep but paved road ascending to the panoramic summit of Monte Penegal, where you can stop to admire the 360° view.

The descent from the summit is made by the same route as the ascent, and once you reach the state road it takes just a few minutes to reach the nearby Passo Mendola.
