Adventure Awakens: Hiking and Cycling in Trentino this Spring New gravel bike trails, wildflower hikes and high-altitude views await in Italy’s quiet season

Spring is a season of movement in Trentino. As the snow recedes and the valleys come to life, the region’s hiking and cycling routes reopen in full, offering a landscape transformed - from white to green, from stillness to motion. This is when Trentino truly awakens. Wildflower trails wind through the Dolomites, lakes shimmer into view and forests reopen to walkers, cyclists and outdoor explorers. Unlike the high heat of summer or the ski season crowds, spring in the mountains offers quiet adventure: calm, cool air, scenic paths with few people, and a new season of gravel biking routes.

NEW for 2026: Alpine Gravel - The New Frontier of Cycling

This year, Trentino launches a series of dedicated Alpine Gravel routes in Val di Sole and Val di Non - a new offering that blends the freedom of gravel biking with the technical challenge of alpine terrain.

Unlike traditional gravel, these high-altitude routes climb between 650 and 2,200 metres, traversing natural paths, rocky trails, mountain roads and forest tracks with minimal asphalt. Designed for experienced cyclists with the right equipment, Alpine Gravel trails feature steep gradients (up to 21%), technical descents and breathtaking scenery ranging from wildflower meadows to panoramic ridge-lines.

Top routes include:

●     Alpine Gravel Lago di Celentino (Val di Sole) - A 45km ride with 1,750 metres of elevation gain, reaching a remote alpine lake with views of the Presanella and Brenta Dolomites. Expect off-road climbs, remote pastures and a true test of skill.

●     Monte Vigo Gravel Route (Val di Sole) - A challenging 47km loop through fir forests and across dramatic ridgelines, descending to Lake Caprioli and finishing with sweeping valley views.

●     Gran Tour Predaia (Val di Non) - A 49km loop with 1,600+ metres of elevation gain, climbing to the Coredo lakes and descending past Castel Thun, orchards and forests.

●     Easy Gravel dei Castelli (Val di Non) - A 17km cultural loop ideal for beginners, taking in panoramic views and castles like Castel Valer, framed by apple orchards and the scent of spring.

Spring Hiking: Wildflowers, Waterfalls and Quiet Peaks

While the snow lingers on Trentino’s highest peaks into June, its valleys and mid-altitude trails begin to bloom as early as March. This makes spring the ideal season for wildflower walks, panoramic day hikes and waterfall trails, many of which are best enjoyed before the summer crowds arrive.

Top Spots for Spring Hiking:

●     Val di Fassa and Val di Fiemme - Known for their biodiversity, these valleys are filled with spring trails that come alive with crocus, orchids, and alpine roses. Try the Sentiero delle Cascatelle near Cavalese - a floral walk along rivers and waterfalls.

●     Parco Naturale Adamello Brenta - Home to over 1,500 plant species, the park offers mid-altitude hikes in spring, especially in Val Genova, where you’ll find wildflower meadows, rushing rivers, and the famous Nardis Waterfalls.

●     Monte Bondone and Viote Alpine Garden - Combine a scenic walk with a visit to one of the oldest alpine botanical gardens in the Alps. From late April, the trails around Viote offer calm walks and expansive views above Trento.

●     Ledro Valley & the Ponale Trail - Reopening each spring, the Ponale path is one of Italy’s most beautiful lakeside trails. Running above Lake Garda Trentino, it’s ideal for walking or cycling and offers Mediterranean flora, spring air and mountain views.

E-bike Friendly: Ride Further, Sooner

Thanks to extensive investment in cycle infrastructure and e-bike networks, Trentino is one of Italy’s best destinations for e-bike travel - especially in shoulder season.

Cyclists of all levels can now access long-distance cycle routes like the Garda-Dolomiti trail, or explore themed itineraries like the Strada della Mela (Apple Route) in Val di Non, which passes through orchards, castles and villages in full spring bloom.

Most rental shops reopen in March and April, and many hotels now include secure bike storage, gear washing, and guided ride options. E-bikes are also available for selected Alpine Gravel routes, particularly in Val di Non.

Why Spring?

For those who love movement, spring in Trentino offers the best of both worlds: fewer people, cooler temperatures, and nature at its most dynamic.

●     Trails reopen in late March and continue to expand through April and May

●     Wildflowers peak from mid-April to early June, depending on altitude

●     Cycling weather is mild, with dry air and snow-capped views

●     Wellness retreats and quiet accommodation offers are more available outside peak summer
