Vermiglio

Embraced by fir forests
  • Walking through forests and mountain lakes
  • Hiking on cross-country skis and snowshoes
  • Reaching the Pontedilegno-Tonale ski area and trying out your skis

Refreshed by the waters of the Vermigliana stream and embraced by a thick fir forest, Vermiglio is a town with a little over 1,800 residents in Trentino. It is located in Val di Sole, a short distance from the Tonale Pass.

In the past, this location was strategic because of its position, right by the border between the Kingdom of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and today, it is the perfect venue for those seeking a holiday filled with sports and relaxation in Trentino's woods and mountains.

In the summer, from the town centre, you can quickly reach high-altitude trekking trails, forest roads and mule tracks to ride MTBs, or easy paths within everyone's reach and Nordic walking trails.

In winter, its position is perfect for both cross-country skiing and downhill skiing. Vermiglio boasts a renowned cross-country skiing centre, and is a short distance from the Tonale slopes, at an altitude of 3,000 metres.

Vermiglio, the film

Vermiglio is the name of a 2024 film by Maura Delpero. The film, set right in the village - the birthplace of the director's father - won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival, and was selected to represent Italy at the 2025 Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film section.

The film was shot in Vermiglio and in the hamlets of Carciato (in the municipality of Dimaro-Folgarida) and Comasine (municipality of Pejo).

Things to see and to do in and around Vermiglio

When you are in Vermiglio, there are at least three places you must visit:

  • The San Leonardo Lakes: located a short distance from the village, they are the perfect place for a picnic or a walk. We recommend both a walk leading from the lakes to the Stavel alpine farms, and a MTB tour, on the bike trail departing from the nearby town of Ossana.
  • Fort Strino: one of the most important forts in the belt of fortifications that the Austro-Hungarian Empire built in the second half of the 19th century. It is still well preserved, and it currently houses a permanent exhibition with findings, documents and photographs relating to the Great War.

If you want to learn more about this topic, you can visit the Museo della Guerra Bianca (White War Museum) in Vermiglio. It brings together Emilio Serra's collection of artefacts and memorabilia, which well express the war's harshness at high altitudes, among the peaks of the Val di Sole, where violent clashes took place between June 1915 and October 1918.

  • The village of Ossana: a 5-minute drive from Vermiglio, it is included on the list of Italy's Most Beautiful Villages. Don't miss San Michele Castle... and its sky, considered among the most beautiful views in Italy.

What to do in Vermiglio in winter

Vermiglio boasts an important cross-country centre, with more than 20 km of trails departing from it. It features rings of varying difficulty for both beginners and experts, which wind through whitewashed fir trees and deer and roe deer tracks. A surreal atmosphere in which to savour the silence and beauty of the landscape, on cross-country skis or with snowshoes.

If you love alpine skiing, from Vermiglio you can quickly reach the Pontedilegno-Tonale Ski area with lifts reaching 3,000 metres, for a total of 100 kilometres of slopes and 28 ski lifts.

What to do in Vermiglio in summer

If Vermiglio winters are covered in white, the town turns a lush green when the weather is fine, thanks to the dense fir forests that cover the valley slopes. For the more experienced, there are high-altitude mountaineering trails that lead to Alpine huts or to the ridges where the remains of trenches are still visible.

There is no shortage of easier walks and mountain bike trails either. This is an ideal place for an active holiday embraced by the scent of a fir forest.
