A journey through the life of Father Chini, hero, saint, missionary, cartographer, cosmographer and anthropologist.

"Explorer, historian, rancher, but above all a missionary and defender of Indian rights." These words, found at the base of the equestrian statue dedicated to him, summarise the life of Father Eusebio Chini, born in Segno, Val di Non in 1645 and who emigrated to Mexico in 1681 to commit himself to the evangelisation and social, civil and economic development of the inhabitants of Pimeria Alta.

In the central square of Segno, behind the imposing statue, stands the Museum of Father Kino:

  • The first sign you can notice is the bronze statue at the entrance, a copy of the statue by the sculptor Silvercruys, which stands in the Famedio of the United States of America.
  • Inside, the auditorium preserves murals by the Mexican Nereo de La Peña depicting the life of the missionary in Sonora and Arizona.
  • In the museum, Kino's work as a cartographer, cosmographer, anthropologist and agronomist is documented through period tools and reproductions of maps drawn by him, while the life and customs of the Indians are witnessed through customs and utensils of everyday life.
  • The room on the second floor displays the astrolabe, the Galileo telescope and a compass, all 17th century instruments.

STRENGTH
