Private Great War Museum 1914-1918
A collection of war artefacts in excellent condition, recovered from the Marmolada glacier.
At Passo Fedaia, visitors can explore a museum dedicated to the Great War on the Marmolada, where remarkable artefacts recovered from the glacier after more than a century are on display. An opportunity to discover one of the most extreme chapters of the White War in the Dolomites.
When Italy entered the war in 1915, the Marmolada became the highest battlefield on the entire Dolomite front and one of the highest of the White War. In recent decades, the glacier covering it has begun to melt, revealing numerous objects that had remained trapped in the ice for over a century.
The artefacts, preserved in excellent condition, are displayed at the Rifugio Alla Seggiovia, overlooking the Fedaia reservoir on the pass of the same name. The museum, set up in two rooms in 1997, was created through the passion of the De Bernardin family from Rocca Pietore, who over the years have recovered around 700 items of various kinds, including a drill used to excavate tunnels, caves and shelters in the legendary Ice City.
The exhibition is complemented by historical film footage and a well-stocked shop.
Andrea, the owner, is often on site and is happy to share his knowledge with visitors.
