In Val San Nicolò, following the legend of Similuce
Bathed in the light of a lush valley, among waterfalls fed by the San Nicolò stream, this is the realm of the golden eagle. Yet it is not only the fairytale landscape that makes this place special: the valley also preserves fascinating traces of the Great War, religious devotion and mountain culture.
A walk leading from Pozza to the entrance of Val San Nicolò, as far as Baita Ta Ciajaa in the hamlet of Saùch. Suddenly, the twin pillars of the Maerins, the Monzoni and the Costabella ridges with Cima Uomo open up before your eyes, while in the background Col Ombert seems to embrace the charming wooden chapel dedicated to Santa Maria delle Vette. In this side valley, summer brings bright alpine pastures, mosses that hide precious geological formations, woods filled with the drumming of woodpeckers and meadows dotted with rare flowers. In winter, everything is softened by snow and the silence becomes almost surreal. This is also where the legend of Similuce lives on: a young girl raised by King Laurin as his daughter, who longed to meet Queen Marmolada. She succeeded in her quest with the help of a magic whistle, which silenced the birdsong to lull an ogre to sleep and, with the light of butterflies, dazzled the witches who wanted to make her their servant.
