Mediterranean flair and peaceful mountain magic

For those who want to explore Trentino beyond the well-known Dolomite scenery and most famous lakes, this summer offers the perfect opportunity to discover three of the region’s best kept secrets: the Valle dei Mòcheni in eastern Trentino – a German-speaking enclave surrounded by dense forests, the Val di Rabbi in the west – a peaceful natural retreat in the Stelvio National Park, and the Brentonico Plateau, known for its exceptional plant diversity and panoramic hiking trails.

Valle dei Mòcheni – A German-speaking Enclave in a Remote Alpine Valley
Located about 20 kilometers from Trento, the Valle dei Mòcheni is a secluded gem in eastern Trentino. Known for its unspoiled landscape of dense forests, alpine pastures, and the clear waters of Lake Erdemolo, the valley also boasts a unique cultural identity. Since the 14th century, descendants of German-speaking settlers from Bavaria and Tyrol have lived here. They still speak Mòcheno, a rare Middle High German dialect preserved by around 2,000 speakers. Language and traditions are a vivid part of daily life, reflected in local place names, architecture and customs.

Val di Rabbi – Mindfulness in an Alpine National Park
In stark contrast to the Mediterranean vibe of Valsugana, Val di Rabbi offers serenity and a deep connection with nature. As part of the Stelvio National Park, this remote valley is a model of sustainable tourism. Visitors can enjoy wild waterfalls, traditional alpine huts, and a breathtaking suspension bridge spanning the Ragaiolo gorge. The valley is also known for its authentic Trentino cuisine and numerous barefoot trails and Kneipp hydrotherapy spots along the mountain streams. For those seeking to slow down and reconnect with themselves, Val di Rabbi offers a tranquil escape amid larch forests, glaciers and a centuries-old mountain culture.

Brentonico Plateau – Botanical Riches and Historic Charm
Nestled within the Monte Baldo Nature Park, often called the ‘Garden of Italy,’ the Brentonico Plateau is famed for its extraordinary botanical diversity and scenic hiking paths. The landscape ranges from flowering alpine meadows to the peaks of Monte Altissimo and Monte Vignola, offering sweeping views over Lake Garda, the Po Valley, and the Dolomites. History enthusiasts will appreciate the charming old towns, historic churches and botanical gardens, such as those at Palazzo Eccheli-Baisi, which also houses a nature and culture museum.
